Sunday Worship

June 4, 2023
Trinity Sunday and Holy Communion

    Words of Welcome and Sharing          Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship  (Read Responsively)          Jenny Spoor
We come today to worship the Triune God, even as we, like the Eleven on the mountainside, have our doubts.
Holy Trinity, meet us in our questions and help us embrace Your mystery.
We come to encounter the God who is greater than words can describe, and yet intimately present with us.
Holy Trinity, surround us with Your love that brings order to chaos and community to individualism.
We come to receive Christ’s commission to make disciples, to baptize, and to teach the gospel wherever we go.
God, immerse us in the life of the Holy Trinity so that we might go and welcome others into the dance of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  AMEN.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Holy God, Three in One, You are our eternal hope, our companion in life, our liberating power. Lead us in Your mission, baptizing and teaching in Your blessed name, so that all may worship You to the end of the age.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          How Great Thou Art          #77 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of all creation, we offer our gifts in gratitude this morning—not just for what You do in our lives, but for who You are in our lives. May these gifts be tools that make the transformation of the world a reality. We pray in the name of one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  AMEN.

Day of Pentecost and Noisy Offering

    Words of Welcome and Sharing         Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

    Call To Worship         Surely the Presence of the Lord         #328 UMH

                                    Martha Deel & Pastor Nancy

    Worship Prayer (Read Responsively)
Like the disciples, we gather in this space, united by our relationship with the Risen Christ.
We come ready to receive what God has to give.
Just as tongues of fire descended on the disciples,
We receive the gift of the Spirit’s power and inspiration.
Just as the resurrected Christ breathed the Spirit onto the disciples,
We receive the gift of the Spirit’s peace and wisdom.
As the life-giving and peacemaking Holy Spirit blazes through us today,
We receive the gift of the Spirit’s fire that unites us as the Body of Christ.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn         God of Grace and God of Glory         #577 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of wind and flame: set us on fire this morning as we celebrate the explosion of Your Holy Spirit coming into the world on the Day of Pentecost! Remind us that the gift You gave that day was not just the gift to speak in different tongues, but also the gift of hearing and comprehension. May Your Holy Spirit keep us attuned to the voices all around us, to those who need us to be bearers of Your love and compassion, and may these gifts we give help us, through Your church, meet those needs. In the holy name of Jesus, we pray.  AMEN.

So now we leave this space of worship and while so much of the road ahead is uncertain, the path constantly changing, we know some things that are as solid and sure as the ground beneath our feet, and the sky above our heads.
We know God is love.
We know Christ’s light endures.
We know the Holy Spirit is there, found in the space between all things, closer to us than our next breath, binding us to each other, until we meet we again,
Go in peace.

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Holy God, author of our existence; our story is part of a greater story, and Your hand is visible on every page and every scene. So too our stories cannot be disconnected from those in the past who have shaped the steps we take—saints and sinners, rebels and followers. They are part of our story as we are part of theirs. As we offer gifts this day, we pray they might be used to strengthen the story of faith that will be told by those who will come after we are gone. We pray this in the name of Jesus.  AMEN.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Blessed be the God of our Savior, Jesus Christ
God has given us a new birth in the living hope of the resurrection.
In this we rejoice, even when we suffer trials.
For although we have not seen Jesus, we love Him, and although we have not seen Him, we believe in Him.

*    Opening Hymn          He Lives               #310 UMH

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Good and gracious God, our most glorious Creator, as we greet the signs in nature around us, of Spring once again regaling us in bloom, in the songs of returning birds and fields soon to be planted, we give You praise for an even greater sign of new life: the resurrection of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that we especially celebrate at this time. As we celebrate, we also dare to ask for Your grace that we may live the promise given to us by imitating the life of Jesus. We praise You in this Easter season. We make our prayer through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord.  AMEN.

Your mercy gives us the opportunities to try again, to return into Your grace, to pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off. You forget how many strikes we have against us but invite us back into the inheritance You desire for us. May our offering this day reflect our gratitude. In Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

    Message          Pastor Nancy

    Affirmation of Faith (Unison)          (Based on 1 Peter 1:3–9)
(Adapted from 1 Peter 1:3-9 by Dr. Lisa Hancock, Discipleship Ministries, October 2022.)
We believe in God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whose mercy we are given new birth into a living hope through Christ’s resurrection from the dead. We believe that through Christ we are born into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading; and into a present salvation that will be revealed in its fullness in the last time. We believe that until that time, the Spirit works in us to grow the genuineness of our faith, that we may give praise, glory, and honor when Jesus, whom we love but have not seen, is revealed.  AMEN.

*    Closing Hymn          Easter People, Raise Your Voices          #304 UMH

*    Sending Forth (Read Responsively)
May you go forth carrying the joy that is yours as a child of God and an heir to resurrection life through Jesus Christ. May that joy fill you up and fuel your journey as we ask in the wake of the resurrection,
     “What now, Lord?”  AMEN.

The dark night is behind us;
the morning light erased all darkness and doubt.
The Lord has risen; He’s no longer among the dead.
He lives. The Lord has risen!
Yes, the Lord lives! The new morning fills our hearts with joy and hope
Let us then worship together, with joyful songs and an unbreakable faith in our Resurrected Redeemer.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Almighty God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, You broke the power of death and opened the way to eternal life. As the empty tomb stands witness to His triumph over death, make Your church to be a bold testimony to His enduring victory in life. May we proclaim to the world “Christ the Lord is Risen, indeed!”  AMEN.

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Mighty God of Resurrection and Redemption, we offer our gifts alongside our alleluias! We long for Easter to fill us and soak into our bones like those who were confronted in a graveyard by angels announcing, “He is not here, He is risen!” May we run from here, not walk, because we and every corner of the world so desperately need to hear the news the angels share! Before we speak a word, may others see in our faces that the world has been turned upside down. In the name of the risen Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

Today, God, we rejoice with Christians everywhere that there was at least one day when Jesus received the recognition He deserved. We rejoice, knowing that His triumphal entry means that truth cannot remain hidden and that good hearts everywhere recognize truth when it appears. We join in hope with people on many continents, in many circumstances as we stand in faith believing in the same God who loved enough to send His only Son.  AMEN.

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Holy God, we enter this Holy Week bringing our tithes and offerings to You in the hope You will use them to make the world a more loving and compassionate place. We are reminded through the scripture that You sent two of Your disciples out to make the world ready for Your coming: “Go into the village. . .find the donkey. . .tell them the Lord has need.” Remind us that Your kingdom breaks into the world and we are called and sent because the Lord still has need. We pray in the name of the one who comes not just for the parade, but for the cross at the end of it.  AMEN.

We go from this place ready to pay attention as the waving of palms turns to a sentence of crucifixion.
Come. Save us. Hosanna.
We go from this place knowing that even in death, God’s love endures.
Come. Save us. Hosanna.

Fifth Sunday in Lent

    Words of Welcome and Sharing         Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
Welcome pilgrims on the way to the cross.
We are learning to follow Jesus.
The journey is long, and the burden of our sins and struggles feels so heavy.
Yet we will hope in God because, with God, there is steadfast love.
Change and struggle have taken their toll—how can anyone bring forth life when we feel so parched and tired?
Yet, God meets the lifeless with the breath of life, reviving us again to worship and follow God’s way.
Pilgrims on the way, come let us worship God!
We come to worship God as we learn to live inside out!  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn       Love Divine, All Loves Excelling       #384 UMH

    Time of Confession
In the season of Lent we are invited to consider how we live as followers of Christ—to look at our decisions and our actions straight on, to hold them up to the example of Christ, and to make amends. In this time of silence, and in our prayer together, let us look at our lives. We pray, first in silence.

    Silent Prayer

    Unison Prayer of Confession
God, You created us in Your own image and loved us regardless. Dear Jesus, help us love one another. Teach us to love unconditionally. Teach us to know that through Jesus Christ, we are one in Christ. We thank You, Lord, that You loved us first. May Your grace enable us to love one another. In Jesus Christ’s name, we pray.  AMEN.

    Psalm 130 (NRSV)

    Declaration of Forgiveness
Happy are those whose sin is forgiven.
Be glad in the Lord and shout for joy:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Almighty and restoring God, we have been living through some difficult days. Days when we rise, we wonder if we will make it through one more day. As we offer our tithes and offerings, help us to hear the word of hope the prophet shares, not just with our ears but with our hearts. May it call us back to life and service, out of the graves of despair in which we have buried ourselves. In Christ’s holy name.  AMEN.

In this time of silence, and in our prayer together, let us look at our lives. We pray, first in silence.

    Silent Prayer

    Unison Prayer of Confession
We are dry, Lord, like the pavement on a sweltering summer day. Our lives are heated, and the streams of our souls sometimes run dry. We catch our tears, but they cannot ease our thirst. We drip in sweat, but this cannot ease the heat. So we beg for only a few drops of refreshing rain to moisten the dryness in our world. We are thankful that God’s promise is greater than rain or streams. We are grateful that God sent a Savior to redeem and fill us with water eternally. Living in the will of God, we live without thirst anymore. AMEN.

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
Welcome pilgrims on the way to the cross.
We are learning to follow Jesus.
When God says, “Go!” without telling us the destination,
show us, Christ, how to go forward in faith.
When we find ourselves in the in-between of where we’ve been and where we’re going,
Christ, meet us on the way and bless us in the going.
Pilgrims on the way, come let us worship God!
We come to worship God as we learn to live inside out! AMEN.

    Silent Prayer

    Unison Prayer of Confession
Holy God, Creator of all that is, Giver of Grace and of Life: hear our prayer. There are chasms in our lives, deep valleys that separate us from one another and from You. We confess that we have allowed those rifts to grow, for fear of admitting our part in the separation, for fear of being rejected when we reach out. You call us to a reconciled life, to healed relationships, to a wholeness with each other and with You. Mend us, we pray, and make us new creations through the power and love of Christ, in whose name we pray.  AMEN.

    Declaration of Forgiveness
Happy are those whose sin is forgiven.
Be glad in the Lord and shout for joy:

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of unwavering love, You have held nothing back in Your love for us, not even Your Son. How we marvel at that kind of love, and how we long to reflect a portion of that devotion back to You. As we dedicate our offerings to You, lead us away from our tendency to hold back and worry that there will not be enough. Help us to live as the people of love and abundance you have called us to be. In Christ we pray.  AMEN.

Welcome, pilgrims, on the way to the cross.
We are learning to follow Jesus.
For those who feel Christ near,
may we not turn away from the discomfort of the journey ahead.
For those who feel as far from Christ as the desert is from the ocean,
may we find Christ in the wilderness with us.
For all of us who stumble and fall in our silence, indifference, and lack of generosity,
may we reach for the hand of Christ, who raises us up to continue on the journey.
Pilgrims on the way, come let us worship God!
We come to worship God.

*    Opening Hymn         Grace Greater than Our Sin         #365 UMH

*    Prayer of Confession
O God, You offer us so much,
forgive us for sharing so little.
You have called us to Your ways,
forgive us for ignoring Your call.
You have given us countless blessings,
forgive us for not giving thanks and for taking Your love for granted; and now, gracious God, be merciful to us in our sin and indifference, through Christ, our Savior.  AMEN.

*    Declaration of Forgiveness

Generous God, as we remember Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, we acknowledge the temptation that pursues so many of us: to measure our worth, our power, and our security by what we have. As we offer these gifts to You this morning, we pray that You might deliver us from the temptation of building our lives around what belongs to us. Continually lead us to the conviction that what matters is that we belong to You. We pray in the name of our Savior and Redeemer.  AMEN.

    Welcome Words and Sharing    Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)         Jean Eads
We come to the mountaintop to be covered in the presence of God.
We are comforted by God’s holiness and glow; we are comforted by the hope of the mountain top, where God is so close, so accessible, where there is no doubt of God’s glory.
The mountain top reminds us why we worship God.
We witness God’s bright power, and the plan for the nations of the earth.
As we prepare for worship, God brings us to the mountaintop;
so that we may be inspired to do the work in the valley below.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
God of majesty and might, You have blessed us with revelations of Your glory. Give us the gift of faith, that we may hear Your voice for ourselves and see Jesus Christ revealed to us that we may stand on our own without fear.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn         I Stand Amazed in the Presence         #371 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving

Holy One,
We come before You, many of us feeling like we have climbed just a part of the mountain, and there is so much more of a climb left to even get to a point to dream that we might be dazzled by what is Divine.
Our loads are heavy, with worry, with regret, with fatigue, with illness, with despair for all in the world that is hurting, in danger, in bondage, and more.
We trudge ahead, following You, stumbling, hoping, praying. . .breathing hard, hearts pounding, and yes, even some of us are nimble and skipping.
Lead us, Lord, to the top of that mountain, where we might be dazzled by Your Light, lifted by what is Divine, filled by the sheer delight of what is numinous and ethereal and grounded and real.
We pray this, for ourselves, for one another, and for the world in which we live in.
AMEN.

*    Closing Hymn         Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus         #349 UMH

    Welcome Words and Sharing         Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
We are called to bring a new understanding of God: that God so loves the world.
We are the salt of the earth.
We are called to bring a new hope in God: that God gives us new life.
We are the light of the world.
We are called to follow the commandments and the law.
The Law of God is to love God and to love one another.
Come, let us be the salt of the earth, the light of the world.
Come, let us love one another with the love of God. Let us join together in our love of God to worship and follow Jesus.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
God of mystery and of judgment, who has made us to be salt and light in a tasteless, shadowed world, guide us in this time of worship. Grant us understanding and spiritual discernment so that others may see Your good works through us, give You the glory, and be moved to serve You.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn         Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know         #163 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of all creation, source of every blessing: you have given us so much. As we bring our tithes and gifts to you this day, they seem so small by comparison, unless we see that we are truly called to give ourselves back to the world. May we be the salt that brings value and flavor into relationships with those around us. May we be the light that helps others find their way to your love and care. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, who came to help us see all we could be.  AMEN.

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jennie Spoor
The God of all creation makes us one in the flesh.
Let us join hearts and voices in praise.
In Jesus Christ, we are made one in the Spirit.
Let us be united in truth through the same one Spirit.
We practice our faith in many different ways.
Yet, we confess one Lord Jesus Christ.
We render different forms of ministry.
Yet, our calling is one because Christ is undivided.
Rejoice, people of God: The Risen Christ is among us, calling us together.
Praise the Lord!

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
God of us all, we come before You knowing that there are struggles among us in our families, with friends, in our churches, and nations. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord:  who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting.  AMEN.

New Year's Day
Epiphany Sunday

   Welcome Words and Sharing         Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
A new day has dawned, a new year begun.
O Lord, call us so we may hear Your voice.
The world turns to hopes and dreams of the future.
O Lord, keep us in Your ways and on Your path.
We enter this new year with hope and excitement.
O Lord, remind us that You lead us. O Lord, guide us as we look to You and worship You.  AMEN.

*    Prayer for Epiphany (Read Responsively)
God of all time, we praise and adore You for breaking into the darkness of this world with the glorious light of Your presence.
A light which made Your love for the world visible in the babe born in Bethlehem—Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Savior.
A light which guided those gift-bearing travelers from afar to find and worship the Christ-child.
A light which leads us to You, now revealed in Jesus Christ.
We pray that You will accept our worship, for it arises from hearts and minds in awe over the enormity of Your gift to us of pure love. In Jesus' name we pray.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn       Angels We Have Heard on High       #238 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of glorious surprises: Like the wise men sent by Herod, we, too, come as searchers for a glimpse of Your presence. Like them, our gifts are outshined by what You have given us. Just the same, use our gifts for the work of justice, mercy, and compassion—as would befit the Savior who sleeps in a manger. It’s in His holy name, we pray.  AMEN.

I am no longer my own, but Thine.
Put me to what Thou wilt, rank me with whom Thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by Thee or laid aside for Thee, exalted for Thee or brought low for Thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things to Thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.  AMEN.

The world around us catches our attention, and we neglect the inner journey that keeps us closer to You. We forget to be grateful. As we set aside this time to bring our gifts to You, may You draw our attention back to all of the blessings that You put before us, and may we be lead to be even more compassionate and generous. In Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

November 13, 2022
23rd Sunday After Pentecost

    Welcome Words         Jennie Spoor
As we worship this day, we are near the end of the Christian year. We are called to sit with the question “What does it mean to speak of the Christ who reigns, or Christ the king?” The Gospel accounts make it clear that Jesus came to redefine what it means to be king. The one who reigns over us is the one who was tried as a criminal, who was punished by oppressive authorities and crucified. That is the one whom we gather to worship and follow. The one who reigns over us, Christ our king.

   Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
It is done.
God has always been in charge--
yesterday and today.
Even when things seem out of control,
God’s reign is on its way.
Let us prepare the way for God.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Lord Jesus, You stretched out Your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross, that all people might come within the reach of Your saving embrace. Clothe us in Your Spirit, that we, stretching out our hands in loving service for others, may bring those who do not know You to an awareness and love of You, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, One God forever!  AMEN!

*    Opening Hymn         Crown Him with Many Crowns         #327 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Almighty, Creator God, we humbly bring our gifts to You this day. On Calvary’s cross, Your son redefined for the world what it meant to rule, what it meant to be a king. In His life, teaching, and interacting with people, Jesus redefined what it means to give in a way that pleases God. May we live and give in a way that reflects the reign over us and the one who lives within us. In the exalted name of Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

22nd Sunday After Pentecost
All Saints Sunday

    Words of Welcome          Pastor Nancy
All Saints (November 1 or the first Sunday in November) is a day of remembrance for the saints, with the New Testament meaning of all Christian people of every time and place. We celebrate the communion of saints as we remember them on this day.

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jennie Spoor
We are people of God, created to love.
We will love the Lord our God with heart, soul, mind, and strength.
We are people of God, determined to love.
We will love our neighbors and treat them as we would be treated.
We choose to love as we imitate God’s nature of love for all.
We choose to follow the example of the saints who have gone before us.
All:  For the whole law is summed up in a single command-ment to love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Faithful God, You are the beginning and the end of all things. You promise to wipe away every tear, that death and mourning will be no more. You make Your home among us and abide with us as our God. Teach us to live like the saints You call us to be, that we may truly be Your people, living and doing Your will, in the name of Jesus Christ.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          I Am Thine, O Lord          #419 UMH

    Time of Remembrance
Timeless God, we thank You for all those before us who have kept the faith to the end. We thank You for brave souls of deathless fame, and also for those whose names are remembered only by You. Give us wisdom to understand Your will and courage to live as Your people in this day; through the grace of Jesus Christ.  AMEN.
We give thanks to You, God, for those who have gone before us, whose lives have shown us Your truth and whose witness brought us and kept us in fellowship with You…
(The names of those who have died in the past year will be spoken ,and a time to share other names close to you will follow.)
                    Gordon Ray Eads
                    Elenora Karnes
                    Roland Payne
ALL:  We bless Your holy name, O God, for all Your servants who, having finished their course, now rest from their labors. Give us grace to follow the example of their steadfastness and faithfulness, to Your honor and glory; through Christ Jesus our Lord.  AMEN.

    Offertory Prayer
God of endless generosity, we lift our offerings to You, fully knowing our gifts often fall short when compared with Your blessings. We know that until we have experienced a moment of deepest trust, gratitude, and sacrifice, we don’t know the heights of joy that generosity can bring us. Until that time, grow our hearts in giving and in compassion for those our offerings will touch and bless. In Christ’s name, we pray.  AMEN.

20th Sunday After Pentecost

    Welcome & Announcements          Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jean Eads
We worship because the Lord stood by us on difficult days.
Even when we weren’t aware and felt alone.
We worship because the Lord gives strength.
Even when we feel so weak.
We worship because we have been rescued again and again.
Even when we are afraid that we have lost.
Come and worship the God who stands with us in our darkest days and promises to be with us to the end.
We will worship in hope, seeking eyes to see and hearts to believe in God with us.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
At the starting line of this day, we call on Your name, God of grace. As we run the race You have set before us, help us to keep our eyes on Your goals, not our own. When we falter, give us fresh strength and courage. When we are flat-footed, let us give You the glory. Keep us from wanting to win at other’s expense or to count ourselves better than those at our side. All runners are Your children in the race You imagine, each one is a winner.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          Standing on the Promises          #374 UMH

    Words of Witness          Gideon Guest

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of the universe, You were with us at the beginning of our lives, and You will be by our side when we draw our last breath. In between, we struggle through life, too often trying to find our way based on our own wants and desires. In our giving to You this day, may You bless us so that we might better keep our eyes focused on You. Bless the gifts toward the work of Your mission. We pray this in the name of Jesus who loved us even to the cross!  AMEN.

Our gathered worship has ended, but our race goes on. The faith we celebrate in here continues to be the faith we keep out there. As you have poured yourself out in worship—in song and in prayer, in fellowship and in unity--
now may we go to pour ourselves out in service to the world God so loves. Let the church be the witness that God is at work in the world.
Go with God.  AMEN.

    Welcome & Announcements          Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jean Eads
We gather here to worship seeking a focus for our being.
God calls us to worship the Word made flesh.
We gather here to worship, though we feel drawn in too many directions, overwhelmed.
God calls us to worship leaning into the Spirit of Truth.
We gather here to worship, wondering, doubting, afraid, hopeful; but we are here.
God calls us to worship with our whole selves.
ALL:  We are here; let us worship with joy.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Lord, Your words are sweet to the taste, let them be our daily meditation and our study. Grant us patience and persistence, and equip us for every good work. Inspire our faith, and give us voices to proclaim Your message, for You alone speak the words of life.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          What a Friend We Have in Jesus          #526 UMH

    Words of Witness

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Holy God, as we offer our gifts to You this day, we pray that, in our giving, we may be reconnected to the reason why we follow and the reason why we give. You called us to be disciples who make disciples—all-in, knowing who we are, who You are, and why we are following. Help us avoid that which distracts, the desire to hear the things that please us and make the road easier; but that will not bring us to the kingdom of justice, mercy, and compassion You desire for us. In Christ, we pray, our guiding light.  AMEN.

    Statement of Faith of the United Church of Canada
A statement of faith or a creed can represent the inward dimension of our beliefs. What is it that we believe? What is it that defines us as followers of Jesus Christ, as disciples?

We are not alone, we live in God’s world.
We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the church:
to celebrate God’s presence,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.  AMEN.
*    Closing Hymn          Are Ye Able               #530 UMH
*    Sending Forth
May we leave this worship moment, resolved to be a sign of God’s presence, to be an ambassador of God’s grace, and a hospitable proclaimer of God’s truth.
Amen and thanks be to God.

17th Sunday After Pentecost
World Communion Sunday

    Welcome & Announcements          Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
We gather, as God's people, bringing our fears and pain, knowing that when our spirits have grown cold,
God rekindles the gift of faith in us.
We gather, as God's people, hanging our broken hearts on the branches of the tree of life, knowing that while friends may turn against us,
God transforms enemies into sisters and brothers.
We gather, as God's people, hungering for healing and hope, knowing that even when life is no picnic,
God prepares a feast for us.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Spirit of God, enlighten our hearts to the reality of divine presence in our midst. Let our worship be pleasing in Your sight, so that our gathering is an experience of deep communion with You and one another. In the name of Jesus Christ, this is our prayer.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          I Know Whom I Have Believed          #714 UMH

    Word of Witness          Martha Deel

    A Litany for World Communion (2 Timothy 1:1–14)
We are here because the Lord laid His hands on us. Jesus sent someone to preach to us before we were old enough to know the meaning of the messages. God’s message caught up with us at different times in our lives and is still catching up with us. We want desperately to hear God’s plan for us, or to get confirmation that we are on the right track.
We know the Lord has laid His hands on us!
The world of our childhood seemed vast. But now the whole world seems like it has moved into our living room: people with names we cannot pronounce, faces that do not look like ours, and behaviors that are foreign to us. How do we get acquainted? How do we show respect? How can we love in spite of our differences and because of them? This giant of a world does not seem to notice us, but God has given us something to give to that world. Can we make a difference? God has given others something to give us. Can we receive their gifts?
We know the Lord has laid His hands on us! We know the Lord has laid His hands on others!

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Gracious and giving God, we bring our tithes and offerings to You this day and pray as we give them that You will kindle in us a deeper faith and a stronger commitment. We acknowledge that some of us have found our way back to You on our own; others of us have lived into a faith that surrounded us from the time we were born, lived out in parents, grandparents, siblings, and spouses. However this faith found its way into our hearts, help us to kindle it to flame, that the world might be set on fire with Your love and compassion. In Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

    Welcome Words          Pastor Nancy
Sometimes we take ourselves so seriously—our opinions, our emotions, our needs, our entitlements—that we fail to notice our effect on others. We do this without knowing it. Today may we become more aware of our common connections and be reminded that God loves us all.

Praise the One whose justice is grace-full and inclusive.
We praise the Spirit that spans the ages.  AMEN!

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
O God of salvation, You desire everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. We are grateful for the offer of forgiveness to each of us through the Redeemer, Christ our Lord.    Welcome Words            Pastor Nancy
My friends, when we are lost, all is not lost.
God is seeking us, ready to turn our lives around,
Gathering us in to the people of God.
Let us rejoice in God’s mercy!

    Prelude            My Lord, What a Morning            Arr. Thygerson

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
God calls to the lost, the least, and all who long for home; God calls when we wander from the path chosen for us and waste the gifts we have been given. God calls and welcomes us back to worship this day.
Let us celebrate and rejoice in God’s presence forever; let us worship God together.

*    Prayer of Confession and Commitment (Unison)
Lord, we would follow You wherever You might lead.
Forgive us when we stumble and when we stray.
Forgive us when, distracted we lose our way.
Be the one to whom we turn, whose hand we hold,
the Shepherd who leads us safely to the fold.
Lord, we would follow You wherever You might lead.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn            Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us            #381 UMH
      Prayer of Thanksgiving

God of relentless love, the Gospel reminds us of the joy You feel when one of Your children chooses the path of repentance and redemption. We picture the celebration in Your heart when that choice is made. Receive the gifts we offer this day as a sign of our striving to get back on the path that leads us to You and use them to help others on the path also. We pray in the name of Jesus the Christ, the light on our path!  AMEN.

We respond to the Spirit’s leading and open ourselves to receive God’s gracious gifts.

11th Sunday After Pentecost

    Welcome Words          Pastor Nancy
Supposedly, John Wesley’s final words were “best thing of all, God is with us.” We love to celebrate that God is with us, and we are not alone. Today we have the promise of presence.

    Prelude          How Great Thou Art/How Great Is Our God          Arr. Page

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
The Lord calls to us to go into the world–
We will go!
God commands us to speak as God commands–
We will speak!
God assures us, “Do not be afraid”--
We trust that God will deliver us!

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
God who knows us, God who formed our souls before anyone knew us: You consecrated us for kingdom work long before our birth. You’ve called us to be a prophet to the nations! We know that life moves in cycles of growth and destruction, picking and pulling, building and overthrowing. Yet, we may rest in the assurance that we are known and loved by God, who creates beautiful things!  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          Here I Am, Lord          #593 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Mighty God, bringing our tithes and offerings to You today, we pray over them and sing Your praises. As we move into our day-to-day lives, we hope the gifts meet the expectations of our discipleship. You have called us to more—to speak for You, to make our testimony part of our offering. We are reminded that You will provide us with the words. Give us the faith and courage to speak of Your love, mercy, and compassion. In Jesus’ name, we pray.  AMEN.

Surround them with Your peace and wisdom. Shelter all of the leaders and students with Your shield of protection and care. Be with them all throughout each day we pray.  AMEN.
