Sunday Worship

February 5, 2023
Fifth Sunday After the Epiphany
Holy Communion

Welcome Words and Sharing         Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
We are called to bring a new understanding of God: that God so loves the world.
We are the salt of the earth.
We are called to bring a new hope in God: that God gives us new life.
We are the light of the world.
We are called to follow the commandments and the law.
The Law of God is to love God and to love one another.
Come, let us be the salt of the earth, the light of the world.
Come, let us love one another with the love of God. Let us join together in our love of God to worship and follow Jesus.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
God of mystery and of judgment, who has made us to be salt and light in a tasteless, shadowed world, guide us in this time of worship. Grant us understanding and spiritual discernment so that others may see Your good works through us, give You the glory, and be moved to serve You.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn         Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know         #163 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of all creation, source of every blessing: you have given us so much. As we bring our tithes and gifts to you this day, they seem so small by comparison, unless we see that we are truly called to give ourselves back to the world. May we be the salt that brings value and flavor into relationships with those around us. May we be the light that helps others find their way to your love and care. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, who came to help us see all we could be.  AMEN.
[If you wish to support Milton United Methodist Church with your tithes and gifts, please mail them to MUMC, 1007 Church Street, Milton WV 25541. If available, you can also give through your bank. If you wish to make a gift today, there is an offering box located at the parking lot entrance sidewalk, and there are offering plates at the doors of the sanctuary.]

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  AMEN.

Thanks be to God!

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jennie Spoor
The God of all creation makes us one in the flesh.
Let us join hearts and voices in praise.
In Jesus Christ, we are made one in the Spirit.
Let us be united in truth through the same one Spirit.
We practice our faith in many different ways.
Yet, we confess one Lord Jesus Christ.
We render different forms of ministry.
Yet, our calling is one because Christ is undivided.
Rejoice, people of God: The Risen Christ is among us, calling us together.
Praise the Lord!

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
God of us all, we come before You knowing that there are struggles among us in our families, with friends, in our churches, and nations. You have called us to proclaim Your gospel and to share Your love. We gather today to embrace the call to love our neighbors as ourselves and to serve in the likeness of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It is in His name we pray.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn     God of the Sparrow, God of the Whale          #122 UMH

Holy God, as we present our tithes and offerings in worship, we know we come from a world that is tearing itself apart due to division. Remind us that You desire unity and one mind from Your children. Help us work at listening in love more than working at speaking louder and winning the day. We dedicate not just our gifts but our minds to the work of Your unifying love. In Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting.  AMEN.

New Year's Day
Epiphany Sunday

Welcome Words and Sharing         Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
A new day has dawned, a new year begun.
O Lord, call us so we may hear Your voice.
The world turns to hopes and dreams of the future.
O Lord, keep us in Your ways and on Your path.
We enter this new year with hope and excitement.
O Lord, remind us that You lead us. O Lord, guide us as we look to You and worship You.  AMEN.

*    Prayer for Epiphany (Read Responsively)
God of all time, we praise and adore You for breaking into the darkness of this world with the glorious light of Your presence.
A light which made Your love for the world visible in the babe born in Bethlehem—Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Savior.
A light which guided those gift-bearing travelers from afar to find and worship the Christ-child.
A light which leads us to You, now revealed in Jesus Christ.
We pray that You will accept our worship, for it arises from hearts and minds in awe over the enormity of Your gift to us of pure love. In Jesus' name we pray.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn       Angels We Have Heard on High       #238 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of glorious surprises: Like the wise men sent by Herod, we, too, come as searchers for a glimpse of Your presence. Like them, our gifts are outshined by what You have given us. Just the same, use our gifts for the work of justice, mercy, and compassion—as would befit the Savior who sleeps in a manger. It’s in His holy name, we pray.  AMEN.

*    John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer (Unison)       #607 UMH
I am no longer my own, but Thine.
Put me to what Thou wilt, rank me with whom Thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by Thee or laid aside for Thee, exalted for Thee or brought low for Thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things to Thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.  AMEN.

Second Sunday of Advent

The Advent Wreath (For Your Reflection)
The circle of the wreath has no beginning and no end just as God’s love has no beginning and no end. The Advent wreath is a simple circle of evergreen branches, a sign of life without end. The candles represent hope, peace, joy, and love while the white candle is the Christ candle.

    Welcome Words        Pastor Nancy

We gather in the beautiful space to worship an amazing God.
To give praise to the source of all our gifts
We are blessed to be called the children of God.
We are more blessed to be disciples of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Let us worship now, giving praise to God
We will worship in joy and in truth.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Even though we sometimes turn away from God, yet God is faithful to us. We are beloved of God and recipients of God’s love and blessings. We rejoice as children of God! For God’s mercies are ever before us.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn         We Gather Together         #131 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Holy God who calls us to the journey: it is so easy for us to become distracted so that we wander off the path You have put before us. The world around us catches our attention, and we neglect the inner journey that keeps us closer to You. We forget to be grateful. As we set aside this time to bring our gifts to You, may You draw our attention back to all of the blessings that You put before us, and may we be lead to be even more compassionate and generous. In Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

November 13, 2022
23rd Sunday After Pentecost

    Welcome Words         Jennie Spoor
As we worship this day, we are near the end of the Christian year. We are called to sit with the question “What does it mean to speak of the Christ who reigns, or Christ the king?” The Gospel accounts make it clear that Jesus came to redefine what it means to be king. The one who reigns over us is the one who was tried as a criminal, who was punished by oppressive authorities and crucified. That is the one whom we gather to worship and follow. The one who reigns over us, Christ our king.

   Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
It is done.
God has always been in charge--
yesterday and today.
Even when things seem out of control,
God’s reign is on its way.
Let us prepare the way for God.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Lord Jesus, You stretched out Your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross, that all people might come within the reach of Your saving embrace. Clothe us in Your Spirit, that we, stretching out our hands in loving service for others, may bring those who do not know You to an awareness and love of You, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, One God forever!  AMEN!

*    Opening Hymn         Crown Him with Many Crowns         #327 UMH

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Almighty, Creator God, we humbly bring our gifts to You this day. On Calvary’s cross, Your son redefined for the world what it meant to rule, what it meant to be a king. In His life, teaching, and interacting with people, Jesus redefined what it means to give in a way that pleases God. May we live and give in a way that reflects the reign over us and the one who lives within us. In the exalted name of Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

22nd Sunday After Pentecost
All Saints Sunday

    Words of Welcome          Pastor Nancy
All Saints (November 1 or the first Sunday in November) is a day of remembrance for the saints, with the New Testament meaning of all Christian people of every time and place. We celebrate the communion of saints as we remember them on this day.

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jennie Spoor
We are people of God, created to love.
We will love the Lord our God with heart, soul, mind, and strength.
We are people of God, determined to love.
We will love our neighbors and treat them as we would be treated.
We choose to love as we imitate God’s nature of love for all.
We choose to follow the example of the saints who have gone before us.
All:  For the whole law is summed up in a single command-ment to love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Faithful God, You are the beginning and the end of all things. You promise to wipe away every tear, that death and mourning will be no more. You make Your home among us and abide with us as our God. Teach us to live like the saints You call us to be, that we may truly be Your people, living and doing Your will, in the name of Jesus Christ.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          I Am Thine, O Lord          #419 UMH

    Time of Remembrance
Timeless God, we thank You for all those before us who have kept the faith to the end. We thank You for brave souls of deathless fame, and also for those whose names are remembered only by You. Give us wisdom to understand Your will and courage to live as Your people in this day; through the grace of Jesus Christ.  AMEN.
We give thanks to You, God, for those who have gone before us, whose lives have shown us Your truth and whose witness brought us and kept us in fellowship with You…
(The names of those who have died in the past year will be spoken ,and a time to share other names close to you will follow.)
                    Gordon Ray Eads
                    Elenora Karnes
                    Roland Payne
ALL:  We bless Your holy name, O God, for all Your servants who, having finished their course, now rest from their labors. Give us grace to follow the example of their steadfastness and faithfulness, to Your honor and glory; through Christ Jesus our Lord.  AMEN.

    Offertory Prayer
God of endless generosity, we lift our offerings to You, fully knowing our gifts often fall short when compared with Your blessings. We know that until we have experienced a moment of deepest trust, gratitude, and sacrifice, we don’t know the heights of joy that generosity can bring us. Until that time, grow our hearts in giving and in compassion for those our offerings will touch and bless. In Christ’s name, we pray.  AMEN.

    Welcome & Announcements          Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jean Eads
We worship because the Lord stood by us on difficult days.
Even when we weren’t aware and felt alone.
We worship because the Lord gives strength.
Even when we feel so weak.
We worship because we have been rescued again and again.
Even when we are afraid that we have lost.
Come and worship the God who stands with us in our darkest days and promises to be with us to the end.
We will worship in hope, seeking eyes to see and hearts to believe in God with us.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
At the starting line of this day, we call on Your name, God of grace. As we run the race You have set before us, help us to keep our eyes on Your goals, not our own. When we falter, give us fresh strength and courage. When we are flat-footed, let us give You the glory. Keep us from wanting to win at other’s expense or to count ourselves better than those at our side. All runners are Your children in the race You imagine, each one is a winner.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          Standing on the Promises          #374 UMH

    Words of Witness          Gideon Guest

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
God of the universe, You were with us at the beginning of our lives, and You will be by our side when we draw our last breath. In between, we struggle through life, too often trying to find our way based on our own wants and desires. In our giving to You this day, may You bless us so that we might better keep our eyes focused on You. Bless the gifts toward the work of Your mission. We pray this in the name of Jesus who loved us even to the cross!  AMEN.

now may we go to pour ourselves out in service to the world God so loves. Let the church be the witness that God is at work in the world.
Go with God.  AMEN.

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)          Jean Eads
We gather here to worship seeking a focus for our being.
God calls us to worship the Word made flesh.
We gather here to worship, though we feel drawn in too many directions, overwhelmed.
God calls us to worship leaning into the Spirit of Truth.
We gather here to worship, wondering, doubting, afraid, hopeful; but we are here.
God calls us to worship with our whole selves.
ALL:  We are here; let us worship with joy.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Lord, Your words are sweet to the taste, let them be our daily meditation and our study. Grant us patience and persistence, and equip us for every good work. Inspire our faith, and give us voices to proclaim Your message, for You alone speak the words of life.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          What a Friend We Have in Jesus          #526 UMH

    Words of Witness

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Holy God, as we offer our gifts to You this day, we pray that, in our giving, we may be reconnected to the reason why we follow and the reason why we give. You called us to be disciples who make disciples—all-in, knowing who we are, who You are, and why we are following. Help us avoid that which distracts, the desire to hear the things that please us and make the road easier; but that will not bring us to the kingdom of justice, mercy, and compassion You desire for us. In Christ, we pray, our guiding light.  AMEN.

Statement of Faith of the United Church of Canada
A statement of faith or a creed can represent the inward dimension of our beliefs. What is it that we believe? What is it that defines us as followers of Jesus Christ, as disciples?

We are not alone, we live in God’s world.
We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the church:
to celebrate God’s presence,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.  AMEN.
*    Closing Hymn          Are Ye Able               #530 UMH
*    Sending Forth
May we leave this worship moment, resolved to be a sign of God’s presence, to be an ambassador of God’s grace, and a hospitable proclaimer of God’s truth.
Amen and thanks be to God.

17th Sunday After Pentecost
World Communion Sunday

    Welcome & Announcements          Pastor Nancy

    Prelude

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
We gather, as God's people, bringing our fears and pain, knowing that when our spirits have grown cold,
God rekindles the gift of faith in us.
We gather, as God's people, hanging our broken hearts on the branches of the tree of life, knowing that while friends may turn against us,
God transforms enemies into sisters and brothers.
We gather, as God's people, hungering for healing and hope, knowing that even when life is no picnic,
God prepares a feast for us.

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
Spirit of God, enlighten our hearts to the reality of divine presence in our midst. Let our worship be pleasing in Your sight, so that our gathering is an experience of deep communion with You and one another. In the name of Jesus Christ, this is our prayer.  AMEN.

*    Opening Hymn          I Know Whom I Have Believed          #714 UMH

    Word of Witness          Martha Deel

A Litany for World Communion (2 Timothy 1:1–14)
We are here because the Lord laid His hands on us. Jesus sent someone to preach to us before we were old enough to know the meaning of the messages. God’s message caught up with us at different times in our lives and is still catching up with us. We want desperately to hear God’s plan for us, or to get confirmation that we are on the right track.
We know the Lord has laid His hands on us!
The world of our childhood seemed vast. But now the whole world seems like it has moved into our living room: people with names we cannot pronounce, faces that do not look like ours, and behaviors that are foreign to us. How do we get acquainted? How do we show respect? How can we love in spite of our differences and because of them? This giant of a world does not seem to notice us, but God has given us something to give to that world. Can we make a difference? God has given others something to give us. Can we receive their gifts?
We know the Lord has laid His hands on us! We know the Lord has laid His hands on others!

    Prayer of Thanksgiving
Gracious and giving God, we bring our tithes and offerings to You this day and pray as we give them that You will kindle in us a deeper faith and a stronger commitment. We acknowledge that some of us have found our way back to You on our own; others of us have lived into a faith that surrounded us from the time we were born, lived out in parents, grandparents, siblings, and spouses. However this faith found its way into our hearts, help us to kindle it to flame, that the world might be set on fire with Your love and compassion. In Christ, we pray.  AMEN.

This is a shortened video of the service. Please go to FaceBook for the full version.
    Welcome Words          Pastor Nancy
Sometimes we take ourselves so seriously—our opinions, our emotions, our needs, our entitlements—that we fail to notice our effect on others. We do this without knowing it. Today may we become more aware of our common connections and be reminded that God loves us all.

Prelude          God Hath Spoken by the Prophets          Arr. Livingston, Jr.

*    Call To Worship (Read Responsively)
Come and worship!
We will praise the One between, within, and over.
Trust in the One who creates the was, the now, and the will-be.
Our hope is in the One who creates expansive love, calling us to do the same.
Praise the One whose justice is grace-full and inclusive.
We praise the Spirit that spans the ages.  AMEN!

*    Opening Prayer (Unison)
O God of salvation, You desire everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. We are grateful for the offer of forgiveness to each of us through the Redeemer, Christ our Lord. We are grateful that over and over we are given the chance to begin again and that nothing we have done can separate us from God’s love. May we be ever so gracious to others, and may we share Your love in this lifetime.  AMEN.

Yet, we may rest in the assurance that we are known and loved by God, who creates beautiful things!  AMEN.
